A pharmacy in Manhattan called us at NYC Doors and More to repair their cellar door that had been damaged by a snowplow. Unfortunately, the extent of the damage was too great, and a repair was not possible. Our technician suggested that the owner replace the damaged and rusty door with a new one.
This was the correct option, because every year, pedestrians in Manhattan are injured by improperly maintained cellar doors. If a cellar door is closed but is not flush with the sidewalk, this could cause people to trip and fall, leading to serious injury.
In New York City, store owners are obligated to keep the sidewalk in front of their store safe. If the property owner leaves a cellar door open and someone is injured as a result, the owner is legally responsible to pay the injured person compensation.
